Geoffrey von Maltzahn, PhD, New Venture Principal

Geoff von Maltzahn is a New Venture Principal at Flagship, where he focuses on inventing new technologies and new venture creation opportunities. He joined Flagship in 2009 after completing his doctoral work at MIT.

Geoffrey von Maltzahn received his S.B. in Chemical Engineering from MIT; his M.S. in Bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego, and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics from MIT, with the support of Whitaker and NSF Fellowships. In his graduate work under the guidance of MIT Professor Sangeeta N. Bhatia, Geoff developed the first therapeutics that communicate to amplify targeting to sites of disease, highly parallel methods for monitoring enzymes in vivo, and nanomaterials for remote-controlled cancer therapy. Geoff has received numerous awards for his inventions and research, including the prestigious Lemelson-MIT Student Prize for inventiveness and innovation and the National Inventors Hall of Fame Collegiate Inventors Competition Graduate Student Prize. Geoff has been named a “Whiz Kid” by Mass High Tech, and, as an undergraduate, received both the MIT Haslam Cup and the Randolph G. Wei award for “MIT’s most outstanding contribution in undergraduate research at the interface of life sciences and engineering.”

Geoff has been a co-founder of multiple startup companies, has authored over 20 scientific manuscripts, and has over ten patent applications in biotechnology and nanotechnology. During his time at MIT, Geoff was a research mentor to a number of undergraduates and was named MIT’s Most Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor in 2007. Geoff is currently focused on venture creation opportunities in sustainability, synthetic biology, and health care.
