Tira Jump Delivers 1,000th Java Application Port
SAN FRANCISCO - (BUSINESS WIRE) - June 29, 2004 - Tira Wireless, a provider of enabling technology for the mobile Java(TM) marketplace, today announced that the Tira Jump automated porting platform has been used to create more than 1,000 Java builds from approximately 90 reference applications. Additionally, the Tira Jump platform now also supports porting to 120 different Java technology-based handsets, including the top-selling devices offered by leading manufacturers such as LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sharp, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, and others.
Tira Jump is used by many of today's leading mobile games publishers including Disney Mobile, iFone, Sony Pictures Mobile and THQ Wireless. Some of the world's leading branded games have been ported using Tira Jump and are now available to consumers from mobile operators and wireless portals in North America and Europe including: AT&T Wireless, Bell Mobility, Cingular, O2, Nextel, Rogers Wireless, Sprint, Telefonica, TELUS Mobility, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
According to Sun Microsystems, there are 90 leading mobile operators worldwide that have a Java download program. These operators have offered 300 different Java-based handset models from 30 different manufacturers.
"In a world of numerous unique handsets and mobile operator requirements, Tira Jump is a powerful tool that leverages Java's "write once, run everywhere" promise to enable the fast and efficient deployment of mobile Java applications wherever they are needed," said Juan Dewar, senior director, Consumer and Mobile Systems Group of Sun Microsystems.
Tira Jump is a patent-pending software platform that enables handset manufactures, mobile operators, application developers and publishers to overcome the challenges of device fragmentation. While the Java standard ensures run time environments are consistent across devices, the numerous idiosyncrasies that exist outside of the Java specification require that all Java applications be tailored to each device or mobile operator implementation.
Tira's Jump technology solves this fragmentation problem by automatically generating multiple builds of a mobile Java game or application across a broad range of handsets, languages and mobile operator requirements - all from a portable reference application. This ability reduces porting time from weeks to days and ensures consistency and quality across multiple handsets. Tira's automated process also maximizes the performance of the application for each target handset by adapting graphics, sound as well as compensating for handset or JVM implementation deficiencies.
"The explosive growth in the wireless gaming market along with the increasing number of Java handsets is driving even greater demand for our automated porting platform," said Tony Davis, founder and CEO of Tira Wireless. "Tira Jump is fulfilling the need for quality ports in a timely manner while maximizing the performance of every application on each device. Given this advantage, it is easy to see why Tira Jump is fast becoming the de facto standard in mobile Java application porting." According to a recent report from industry research firm Ovum, more than 250 million Java handsets are in the worldwide market today with that number expected to grow to nearly 1.5 billion in 2008.
Davis, along with Allen Lau, CTO of Tira Wireless, will address the issue of device fragmentation at JavaOne in a presentation titled "Breaking Down Device Fragmentation Barriers". The presentation takes place on Tuesday, June 29 at 11:00am in Gateway 104 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.
