Tira Wireless addresses J2ME device fragmentation with launch of JUMP mobile application porting service
SAN FRANCISCO - 2003 JAVA ONE CONFERENCE (BOOTH #743) - June 10, 2003 - Tira Wireless, a premier wireless application publisher and technology provider for the Java™ 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME™) marketplace, today launched the Tira™ JUMP mobile application porting service. The Tira JUMP service is based on Tira's breakthrough proprietary JUMP technology, which is the first of its kind to address the issues of application compatibility across Java-enabled devices. The Tira JUMP platform enables developers and publishers to rapidly port J2ME applications to a broad selection of popular devices without having to rewrite code, delivering significant cost and time to market savings. This service is immediately available to mobile operators, developers and publishers.
"The J2ME platform for mobile devices has gained tremendous acceptance in the marketplace. With over 100 Java-based devices available today, J2ME is quickly becoming the de-facto standard for wireless games and applications worldwide," said Chris Erickson, president and COO of Tira Wireless. "This flood of devices is a double edged sword, however, providing more choice for consumers but creating challenges for developers who up until today have had to create applications on a per device basis. Tira's mobile application porting service solves the problem of device fragmentation by automatically generating multiple versions of the J2ME application from a single reference application."
The J2ME standard today ensures run time environments are consistent across devices, but numerous idiosyncrasies exist outside of the Java specification, including memory, processing power, screen size, screen color attributes, key mapping, full canvas graphics, sound, vibration, user interface, and networking. All J2ME applications developed must be tailored to address these attributes, which are different for each device.
"Tira eliminates the need for developers and publishers to gain the level and depth of expertise required to create J2ME applications that operate across today's most popular handsets," explains Erickson. "We built the intellectual property we acquired from certifying J2ME applications right into the JUMP technology infrastructure. And now that we are offering this technology as a service, we can 'JUMP' J2ME applications developed or published by a third party from one device to another in hours or days, not weeks or months; and at a fraction of the cost."
Developers and publishers can register online for the JUMP service at www.tirawireless.com/jump. To ensure an application can be easily ported using Tira JUMP, it must be created for a reference device identified by Tira. To make this easy for developers, reference devices selected by Tira are standard devices with available off-the-shelf emulators. Tira has also prepared porting guidelines for developers, which encompass sound design principles that allow for easy porting. Once created, an application is submitted to Tira via the JUMP portal, where it enters the two-stage JUMP process. The first stage of the process validates that the application is ready for porting by automatically verifying it against the guidelines. The second stage automatically generates multiple versions of the application for each target device.
