Flagship Ventures launched Genstruct in 2002 to capitalize on powerful new simulation and knowledge representation methodologies that could address the excess of data and shortage of information created by genomics-driven drug discovery. The company has developed a comprehensive Knowledge Assembly by connecting tens of thousands of biological components into a logical network that can be simulated via computers. By using its unique hypothesis generation engine applied to the Assembly, the company generates highly refined mechanistic explanations of large scale biologic experiments performed during drug discovery or development. Genstruct has validated its technology in partnerships with Pfizer, Berlex/Schering AG and others. Flagship Managing Partner Noubar Afeyan serves as Director along with General Partner Jim Matheson and Flagship Advisor Professor Doug Lauffenburger of MIT, an expert in Systems Biology.
