Petiprin Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University, to develop rational treatments for celiac sprue. Celiac sprue is a common but under-recognized illness with serious medical and lifestyle implications. People with celiac sprue develop an autoimmune reaction to gluten, a common ingredient in many foods. Alvine will engineer enzymes that degrade gluten. Alvine’s approach is compelling and partly validated and avoids some common risks of drug discovery and development.
