Alvine Pharmaceuticals was founded by Chaitan Khosla, Chair, Chemical Engineering and Wells H. Rauser and Harold M. Petiprin Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University, to develop rational treatments for celiac sprue. Celiac sprue is a common but under-recognized illness with serious medical and lifestyle implications. People with celiac sprue develop an autoimmune reaction to gluten, a common ingredient in many foods. Alvine will engineer enzymes that degrade gluten. Alvine’s approach is compelling and partly validated and avoids some common risks of drug discovery and development. The company provides the opportunity to leverage a first-class founder developing a promising approach to a potentially significant commercial opportunity. Flagship General Partner Doug Cole is a Board Observer.
