LS9 was co-founded by Flagship in 2005 to design microbial factories that produce biofuels and other energy related compounds. The company harnesses synthetic biology to tackle the energy crisis by enabling rapid and inexpensive synthesis of valuable chemicals. Scientific cofounders from leading academic institutions, Harvard, Stanford and UC Berkeley, direct the scientific programs. Flagship Principal David Berry is a member of the founding team and Flagship Managing Partner Noubar Afeyan serves as a Director.
